Assisted Gene Flow
assisted-gene-flow-utac
Real assisted gene flow / coral selective-breeding science: regulatory reform enabling proactive AGF for Caribbean elkhorn coral (Baker et al. 2025, Science, DOI 10.1126/science.adx5842) and real, measured larval heat-tolerance gains up to 2.2-fold (Lago et al. 2025, Proc. R. Soc. B, DOI 10.1098/rspb.2025.1817). Honesty check: the same study finds adult response variable -- whether juvenile gains persist to reproductive adulthood is a genuinely open question. Deliberately corrects an initial outbreeding-depression framing (low risk for corals specifically). Deliberately no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge -- see DISCLAIMER.md. GenesisAeon P125.

DISCLAIMER — Real Science, a Corrected Honesty-Check Angle, No Framework Bridge
Why no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge: not only because the cited literature
already provides the necessary quantitative structure -- a deliberate
choice. This project's highly speculative AFET/UTAC experiments must
never stand in the way of climate/ecology topics being accessible and
usable to people who don't work inside that construct and aren't
looking for renormalization groups. Real, checkable science, without
the burden of an unproven framework. See PACKAGE_REGISTRY.md's "Why
no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge in the climate/ecology series" (2026-08-31) in
the GenesisAeon workspace root for the full canonical note.Status: Real, independently verified science. NO UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge. One honesty-check angle deliberately corrected before building.
Where this package came from
Surfaced via a six-document multi-AI gap-analysis of the GenesisAeon climate/ecology portfolio (KlimaAktuell/, six independently-produced documents, 2026-09-01), cross-checked against PACKAGE_REGISTRY.md, then independently deep-dive re-verified before building.
A real correction made before writing any code
The initial candidate-topic summary proposed outbreeding depression as this package's honesty-check complication (a common general concern in assisted-gene-flow literature). A dedicated deep-dive verification pass found this specific framing does not hold for corals: current literature considers outbreeding depression a LOW risk for coral AGF specifically, because corals typically have high existing genetic diversity and an outcrossed population structure -- unlike some other AGF contexts (e.g. small, isolated terrestrial populations) where it is a real, live concern. GenesisAeon Package 125 — real assisted gene flow / coral selective-breeding science. Deliberately has no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge — see DISCLAIMER.md.
For a plain-language explanation of the same topic (German, no jargon, written for general audiences), see WHITEPAPER.md.
Where this package came from
Surfaced via a six-document multi-AI gap-analysis of the GenesisAeon climate/ecology portfolio (KlimaAktuell/, 2026-09-01), then independently deep-dive verified before building — alongside ocean-acidification-utac (P122), tropical-glacier-ecosystem-rle-utac (P123), marine-compound-stressors-utac (P124), and climate-landuse-biodiversity-nexus-utac (P126).
What's real here
- Baker et al. (2025, Science)* — real regulatory reform enabled
- the world's first international coral exchange, specifically to
- bolster genetic diversity in declining Caribbean elkhorn coral
- (Acropora palmata) populations via proactive assisted gene flow
- (AGF), across the tropical western Atlantic.
- Lago et al. (2025, Proceedings of the Royal Society B)* — a
- real, measured empirical anchor: selective breeding improved larval
- heat tolerance by up to 2.2-fold in two Acropora species at
- Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.
- Fitzpatrick & Keller (2015, Ecology Letters)* — the foundational
- genomic-offset methodology used to identify AGF source/target
- population pairs.
Deliberately not one-sided
The SAME Lago et al. 2025 study that reports the strong larval gain also reports that adult response to heat stress was variable — was_adult_response_variable() returns True, and is_juvenile_gain_confirmed_to_persist_to_reproductive_adulthood() returns False. Whether juvenile thermal-tolerance gains actually persist into reproductive adulthood is the real, currently open question in the field.
This package also deliberately corrects an initially-proposed honesty-check angle: outbreeding depression is not the main current concern for coral AGF specifically (corals have high existing genetic diversity and outcrossed population structure, unlike some other AGF contexts) — is_outbreeding_depression_the_main_current_concern_for_corals() returns False.
