Andren 1994 (real 30% habitat-remaining fragmentation threshold), Koh et al. 2004 (real coextinction cascade model, 6300 coendangered affiliate species, ~2/3 of 9650 modeled interspecific systems at collapse risk), current IUCN Red List (169,420 assessed / 47,187 threatened) and WWF Living Planet Index 2024 (terrestrial populations down 69%, 1970-2020), and Simkins et al. 2025 (the honesty check: targeted conservation actions produce real positive outcomes even as the aggregate trend worsens). DISCLAIMER — Real Science, No Invented Bridge Constant, Includes a Complication
Why no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge: not only because the cited literature
already provides the necessary quantitative structure -- a deliberate
choice. This project's highly speculative AFET/UTAC experiments must
never stand in the way of climate/ecology topics being accessible and
usable to people who don't work inside that construct and aren't
looking for renormalization groups. Real, checkable science, without
the burden of an unproven framework. See PACKAGE_REGISTRY.md's "Why
no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge in the climate/ecology series" (2026-08-31) in
the GenesisAeon workspace root for the full canonical note.Status: Real, independently verified science. NO UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge, NO invented Γ value.
Where this package came from
Second of the three remaining candidate gap-topics identified from UTACnextSteps.txt (Grok + a separate Claude-Code-Web session proposing 5 environment/climate/species-protection gap-topics for GenesisAeon). See coral-reef-utac (P114)'s DISCLAIMER.md for the full account of why that dialogue's specific numeric claims — three invented Γ_tipping values, an invented "Pressure-inverted UTAC" formula falsely presented as extracted from the codebase, a wrong "strict GPL-3.0 template" claim, and a non-existent git branch — did not survive independent verification, confirmed by the other session itself when the discrepancies were surfaced back to it.
This package deliberately does NOT use "biodiversity-utac"'s originally proposed framing ("Γ for biodiversity hotspots, Early-Warning for Amazon dieback at ~20-25% deforestation") — that specific example (Amazon dieback) is already covered by the existing amazon-utac (P19), and no real, i

GenesisAeon Package 115 — real, independently verified habitat- fragmentation thresholds and coextinction-cascade science. Second of the three remaining candidate gap-topics from UTACnextSteps.txt (after coral-reef-utac, P114). Deliberately has no UTAC/CREP/AFET bridge and no invented Γ value — see DISCLAIMER.md.
For a plain-language explanation of the same topic (German, no jargon, written for general audiences), see WHITEPAPER.md.
Deliberately not one-sided
does_a_worsening_aggregate_trend_mean_intervention_is_futile() returns False — Simkins et al. (2025) reviewed 67,217 species and found that specific, documented conservation actions measurably improved individual species' status even while the aggregate biodiversity trend continued downward. Collapse-mechanism science and "intervention works" are both real; this package documents both.
What's real here
- Andrén (1994, Oikos)* — a real, foundational review: where 30%
- or more of original habitat remains, fragmentation itself doesn't
- add measurably to species-richness decline beyond habitat loss
- alone. Below 30%, fragmentation effects compound habitat loss.
- Koh et al. (2004, Science)* — a real, published probabilistic
- coextinction model: ~6,300 affiliate species are "coendangered" with
- already-endangered hosts, and roughly two-thirds of 9,650 modeled
- interspecific systems could collapse if one partner is lost.
- IUCN Red List (current) — 169,420 species assessed, 47,187
- (~28%) threatened; the first Global Tree Assessment found 38% of
- assessed tree species at risk — disproportionately high, and
- directly relevant to coextinction risk since trees are foundational
- habitat.
- WWF Living Planet Report 2024 — real, tracked population-trend
- index across almost 35,000 vertebrate populations (5,495 species,
- 1970–2020): terrestrial populations down 69% on average (freshwater,
- the steepest biome, is already covered by
-
freshwater-ecosystem-stressors-utac, P106, so this package uses - the terrestrial figure to avoid duplicating that number).
- Simkins et al. (2025, PLOS Biology)* — the honesty-check
- citation: a real, large-sample review showing targeted conservation
- actions produce real positive outcomes even amid a real, worsening
- aggregate trend.
